Why do they tell you when you are depressed not to drink caffeine, it is the only thing that seems tohelp me.?

Answer:
Well, I was in therapy for depression a couple years ago, and my therapist told me that the reason I drank so much caffiene was to self medicate my depression- so yeah, it will help your depression in the short term but it isn't the solution to your problem.
Depression is a lack of fluid to the brain. Oxygen is in water and thus supplies the brain with active energy. Caffeine dehydrates the system. It gives a high, but doesn't help the underlying trouble. Drink at least 8- 10oz. glasses of water a day. Not soda's or coffee. Those are additional fluid. Water has many wonderful healing qualities. Not from plastic bottles either. They hide the polycarbons we do not need.
It's a generalization. Caffeine affects some people, but it is always implied that it affects everybody with the condition. Totally not true. It's like salt. Only 1/3 of people with problems are salt sensitive; the other 2/3 of folks can have pretty much whatever amount of salt they want.

Give up caffeine for 2 weeks. If you see no difference, you are likely not caffeine sensitive.

Adding an additional comment: research has shown that those who regularly drink caffeinated beverages, like coffee, do not suffer dehydration. It is only does that to those who don't normally consume it. Alcohol, on the other hand, does continue to cause dehydration as it is a more powerful drug.
Caffeine is a drug. Its not regulated. It causes exhaustion, fatigue and its drying to the body internally. Lastly and most imortantly, it affects the neuron firing that happens in the brain. My advice stay away from it!
Caffeine is a stimulant that leaves your body quickly. Having that said, after comming down from drinking a cup of coffee your body may try to balance itself to normal levels and leave you feeling just as or more depressed that before you drink it.

Also mental health is a lot of trial-and-error. It is still a "newer" medical science.
